Finding Comfort Through Mourning

Today at church, Pastor Kris spoke about the act of mourning our sin and receiving the comfort of Jesus Christ. He asked a simple but searching question: What brings you comfort?

Almost instantly, my mind went to things like a hug, warm blankets, comfortable clothes like camo, and even driving the tractor. These are things that feel safe and familiar—things we naturally turn to when life feels heavy.

Pastor Kris reminded us that we are poor in spirit, yet the work has already been finished on the cross. Isaiah 40 beautifully foreshadows what Jesus would one day do for us. Through Christ, comfort is not something we have to earn—it is something He freely gives.

He reminded us that it’s okay, and even necessary, to mourn our sin and lay it at the feet of Jesus. God’s Word tells us that we must recognize our sin before we can truly mourn it. And then he asked a challenging question: When was the last time we truly mourned our sin—when we actually wept over it?

It’s often easier to deny what we’ve done or push it aside rather than sit in the weight of it. Mourning feels uncomfortable. But while we all want comfort, God’s comfort comes through mourning, not around it.

So what are our comforts in life? What do we run to when conviction comes? Pastor Kris encouraged us to set those things aside and come honestly before God. When we repent and bring our sin to Him, God does not punish us—He forgives us. Mourning is not condemnation; it is part of the path toward healing and freedom.

True comfort is found in Jesus—the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He carried every one of our sins to the cross so we wouldn’t have to carry them alone.

So the question remains:
What comfort are we going to seek?
Will we draw near to Jesus, or will we keep reaching for temporary comforts?

Real comfort is found at the feet of Christ.
